How to Resolve Unexpected Inconsistency Error in Linux?

Saturday, January 23rd, 2010

Linux is considered to be a reliable operating system due to the data security features it offers. But due to reasons like unexpected shutdown, a Linux filesystem might get corrupt and prevent you from accessing the data. When you turn on a Linux system, fsck runs if finds any errors on the disk. However, if boot-time fsck cannot perform the desired repair task, it returns errors. To cope up with such problems, you might need to reinstall the operating system. You should use your backup to restore the lost data or scan the hard disk using Linux Data Recovery software.

For an instance, when you try to boot a Linux based system, it fails and gives the similar error:

/dev/sda5: UNEXPECTED INCONSISTENCY; RUN fsck MANUALLY

(i.e., without -a or -p options)”

You cannot access the data stored on your hard disk after this error message occurs.

Cause

Boot time ‘Unexpected Inconsistency’ generally occurs due to filesystem defects. Your filesystem might be corrupted. Possible causes for such defects are:

·Improper system shutdown. For performance reasons, a Linux system performs filesystem buffering in its memory. The data written to the buffer memory is updated on the hard drive usually in every 30 seconds. The Linux filesystem might get damaged if an unexpected shutdown takes place while the write process is still running.

·Faulty hardware: A damaged hard disk controller or disk itself can eventually corrupt a file system.

Solution

Below are the steps that you need to undertake to solve the existing issue:

·Use Linux Rescue CD or installation disk to boot the system

·Execute the following command while making sure that the affected disk is not mounted:

e2fsck -f -c -y /dev/sda5

Ø-f option checks the filesystem even if it is appearing consistent

Ø-c options check the disk for bad sectors

Ø-y option answers ‘yes’ to all the questions while making repair

·If e2fsck fails, you need to format the corrupted disk and reinstall Linux. Restore lost data from backup thereafter.

While the unavailability of valid backup, you need to use Linux Recovery applications to search and restore the lost data. Linux Data Recovery tools employ high-end scanning algorithms and are competent to recover data in all set of conditions of logical crash.

Stellar Phoenix Linux Data Recovery is a comprehensive data recovery utility that recovers and restores lost data from Ext2, Ext3 and ReiserFS filesystems. Data Loss Due to up Gradation of Windows XP Operating System

Friday, January 22nd, 2010

Up gradation of Windows operating system to its upgraded version allows to use the additional benefits added into the upgraded version. A STOP error message after up gradation process occurs on a system that does not use an Intel processor. Two hazards that you encounter on a STOP error message occurrence are – uncountable hard drive and data inaccessibility. To overcome both of the above hazards, you will need to restore data from an updated backup. However, if no backup is available or backup falls short of restoring the required data, then you will need to use a powerful Partition Recovery Software to recover you lost files and folders.

Consider a practical example, where you upgrade your system (that does not use an Intel processor) to Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) or to Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3). After the up gradation process is complete and you restart your system, you encounter the below error message:

A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer…
Technical information:
STOP: 0×0000007E (0xC0000005, 0xFC5CCAF1, 0xFC90F8C0, 0xFC90F5C1) SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED”

The four parameters in the above error message differ due to system’s configuration.

The above STOP error message makes the data saved in the hard drive inaccessible. Moreover, the same error message reappears each time you attempt to start your computer system.

Cause:

The above STOP error message primarily occurs when a Sysprep (System Preparation) image is deployed from a system that does not use an Intel processor from a system that uses Intel processor.

Resolution:

For comprehensive solution of the above error message, you will need to make some changes in the computer’s registry. To do so, you will need to take the below steps:

  • Firstly, you will need to restart your system in safe mode

  • Click Start, Run, type regedit, and then click OK to open the Registry Editor window.

  • Search and then click on the below registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMControlSet001ServicesIntelppm

  • Right-click the Start entry on the right-pane, and then click on Modify

  • Type 4 in the Value data box, and then click OK.

  • Lastly, exit Registry Editor and restart your system.

However, if you encounter the same error message even when you restart your system, then you will need to use advanced partition recovery software to recover your data. Such file recovery utilities employ effective scanning methods to completely scan and recover data from a storage device.

Stellar Phoenix Windows Data Recovery is powerful file recovery application. It ensures absolute recovery of data from corrupted, deleted, formatted or lost hard drive partitions. The non destructive utility supports185 varied file types. It is compatible with FAT32, VFAT, NTFS and NTFS5 file systems. Google Android Series: First Impressions

Monday, January 4th, 2010

In this video, I give my first impressions of the T-Mobile G1 phone which includes the Google Android OS. Thanks to T-Mobile for providing a review unit so that I can share with you all the experience. Size wise, it’s a bit bigger than my iPhone mostly due to the built-in sliding QWERTY keyboard. The very first thing I noticed while using the G1 was that there was a bit of an learning curve in terms of when to use the touch screen and when to use the hardware keys. I also noticed that you …

The Best Android Mobile Phone: HTC Tattoo

Sunday, January 3rd, 2010

Being the current flagship Android unit of HTC, the HTC Tattoo is organized to bring the Android program to a broader market by making it become a very cost-effective mobile phone in comparison to its precursors.

The HTC Tattoo is about the same as the HTC Touch 3G only that it operates on the Android program instead of the Windows mobile operating system but is still fairly similar in terms of technical specs. The HTC Tattoo phone has a 2.8″ 240 x 320 pixel touch sensitive display, a 3.2 megapixel camera, integral Global Positioning System and a digital compass, 3.5G support, WiFi and microSD expandable storage.

The Tattoo’s media player can cope with most major formats including MP3, AAC, MPEG4 and Windows Media. A 3.5mm audio socket is also a nice and a big betterment over the past models that has the USB headphone setup instead. An FM radio is incorporated as well for those individual who likes to listen to their favorite radio station.

HTC Tattoo have packed the standardized Android bundle and have worked their magic on it, making a unified means of tracking inter-group communications, and a variation of the TouchFLO interface on top. There are all sorts of Google package involved as well, such as Google Maps.

Design-wise the HTC Tattoo has a really sleek construction. A very compact device measuring approximately 106 x 55 x 14mm and weighing about 113 grams. The 1100 mAh battery is quoted as being good for 5 hours 40 minutes talktime on 3G and 21 days standby time, which will probably make it a practical phone for all-day use.

At the heart of this good mobile device is a Qualcomm MSM7225 528 MHz processor with 256 MB of RAM.

HTC say that the Tattoo will be available in Europe in October with other regions following later, maybe with varying UMTS frequencies.

There are rather a few Android handsets about now, the question is, is there really a “mass market” for this kind of mass market Android phone? We will just have to wait and see.

Big Brother is Watching

Monday, December 14th, 2009

One of the first companies to pick up the Zii technology is GrandEye, who manufacture 180° CCTV cameras. Where GrandEye cameras differ to conventional cameras is that they have no moving parts, and are capable of viewing entire areas at once. They work by using a custom camera sensor in conjunction with a domed lens – a bit like the see-all mirrors you used to see in department stores.

The challenge here lies in processing a great deal of data at once, which is where the Zii chip comes in. As GrandEye’s James Lonson says, in a nice bit of press bumpf, the Zii manages ‘all the camera’s intensive processing requirements on a single chip, resulting in significant reduction in cost and power consumption.’

GrandEye isn’t the only one to benefit from the Zii’s power. Creative showed off the Zii’s power in Google’s open-source, mobile phone-based Android platform. The demonstration, at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, showed an Android-based Zii-powered device playing back high-definition l,080p video – something current Android phones, such as the T-Mobile H1, aren’t anywhere near capable of.

As ZiiLABS’ Tim Lewis says, the hi-def playback on a mobile platform is ‘a feat which has been reported to only be achievable five years from now. By building upon our existing Linux SDK and optimized libraries, we can take full advantage of the highly efficient, scalable ZMS architecture to deliver media-rich Android platforms with unprecedented acceleration, including HD video playback and advanced graphics.’

Creative is set to release its Android platform to OEMs during the winter of this year, and thanks to the open-source nature of the Android platform programmers should be able to easily access the Zii’s functionality. With any luck well be seeing the first Zii-based phones before Christmas 2009.
