Google Android Series: First Impressions

Monday, January 4th, 2010

In this video, I give my first impressions of the T-Mobile G1 phone which includes the Google Android OS. Thanks to T-Mobile for providing a review unit so that I can share with you all the experience. Size wise, it’s a bit bigger than my iPhone mostly due to the built-in sliding QWERTY keyboard. The very first thing I noticed while using the G1 was that there was a bit of an learning curve in terms of when to use the touch screen and when to use the hardware keys. I also noticed that you …

The Best Android Mobile Phone: HTC Tattoo

Sunday, January 3rd, 2010

Being the current flagship Android unit of HTC, the HTC Tattoo is organized to bring the Android program to a broader market by making it become a very cost-effective mobile phone in comparison to its precursors.

The HTC Tattoo is about the same as the HTC Touch 3G only that it operates on the Android program instead of the Windows mobile operating system but is still fairly similar in terms of technical specs. The HTC Tattoo phone has a 2.8″ 240 x 320 pixel touch sensitive display, a 3.2 megapixel camera, integral Global Positioning System and a digital compass, 3.5G support, WiFi and microSD expandable storage.

The Tattoo’s media player can cope with most major formats including MP3, AAC, MPEG4 and Windows Media. A 3.5mm audio socket is also a nice and a big betterment over the past models that has the USB headphone setup instead. An FM radio is incorporated as well for those individual who likes to listen to their favorite radio station.

HTC Tattoo have packed the standardized Android bundle and have worked their magic on it, making a unified means of tracking inter-group communications, and a variation of the TouchFLO interface on top. There are all sorts of Google package involved as well, such as Google Maps.

Design-wise the HTC Tattoo has a really sleek construction. A very compact device measuring approximately 106 x 55 x 14mm and weighing about 113 grams. The 1100 mAh battery is quoted as being good for 5 hours 40 minutes talktime on 3G and 21 days standby time, which will probably make it a practical phone for all-day use.

At the heart of this good mobile device is a Qualcomm MSM7225 528 MHz processor with 256 MB of RAM.

HTC say that the Tattoo will be available in Europe in October with other regions following later, maybe with varying UMTS frequencies.

There are rather a few Android handsets about now, the question is, is there really a “mass market” for this kind of mass market Android phone? We will just have to wait and see.

Big Brother is Watching

Monday, December 14th, 2009

One of the first companies to pick up the Zii technology is GrandEye, who manufacture 180° CCTV cameras. Where GrandEye cameras differ to conventional cameras is that they have no moving parts, and are capable of viewing entire areas at once. They work by using a custom camera sensor in conjunction with a domed lens – a bit like the see-all mirrors you used to see in department stores.

The challenge here lies in processing a great deal of data at once, which is where the Zii chip comes in. As GrandEye’s James Lonson says, in a nice bit of press bumpf, the Zii manages ‘all the camera’s intensive processing requirements on a single chip, resulting in significant reduction in cost and power consumption.’

GrandEye isn’t the only one to benefit from the Zii’s power. Creative showed off the Zii’s power in Google’s open-source, mobile phone-based Android platform. The demonstration, at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, showed an Android-based Zii-powered device playing back high-definition l,080p video – something current Android phones, such as the T-Mobile H1, aren’t anywhere near capable of.

As ZiiLABS’ Tim Lewis says, the hi-def playback on a mobile platform is ‘a feat which has been reported to only be achievable five years from now. By building upon our existing Linux SDK and optimized libraries, we can take full advantage of the highly efficient, scalable ZMS architecture to deliver media-rich Android platforms with unprecedented acceleration, including HD video playback and advanced graphics.’

Creative is set to release its Android platform to OEMs during the winter of this year, and thanks to the open-source nature of the Android platform programmers should be able to easily access the Zii’s functionality. With any luck well be seeing the first Zii-based phones before Christmas 2009.

Windows Partition Corrupt After Aborting Operating System Installation

Tuesday, January 6th, 2009

On a Windows installed computer, you can install Linux as the second operating system. To proceed Linux installation, you need to create /boot partition using free space available on the hard disk or by shrinking the existing Windows partition. You are not recommended to abort the Linux installation while the Setup is creating space for /boot partition. Doing so might render the Windows partition inaccessible. Your data might get lost and thus, to restore the data, you will need to use your current data backup. If it is not feasible as data backup is damaged or incomplete, you need to use an efficient Windows Partition Recovery application.

To illustrate it, consider the below scenario:

You use a Windows installed computer system with two partitions, boot partition and a data partition

You run Linux Setup to install the operating system on free space of the hard drive

You abort the installation operation while it was creating the /boot partition

You restart the computer and find that the data partition is inaccessible

The data partition is accessible but when you use any utility that accesses partitions’ information, it reports incorrect information about hard drive partitions

Cause

You have partially or completely corrupted the MBR partition table by aborting Linux installation process. An interrupted installation might introduce errors in hard disk partition table.

Solution

To solve the existing issue, you might consider the following recommendations:

You can delete and recreate the damaged partition provided you have a valid data backup available

If you do not have any clean backup that could be used to restore the lost information, you need to use a third-party utility Partition Recovery

Windows Partition Recovery tools are suitable applications that could restore lost data from a corrupted, damaged, lost or formatted hard disk partition. These software are embedded with advanced options and safe, yet powerful, scanning algorithms that could locate the missing data and restore it at a safe location. Such utilities serve as comprehensive recovery products to recover logically crashed Windows partitions.

How to Backup in Linux Using Mondoarchive Command

Wednesday, June 11th, 2008

Data loss is a horrible reality and it may occur to any system, nevertheless of the hardware and system configuration. You can prevent such situations by creating a reliable and complete backup of your storage media. In Linux operating system, you can use mondoarchive command for this purpose. If you have a complete backup of your data, you can prevent need of Linux Data Recovery in case of any mishap.

The mondoarchive command backups a subset of all your files, whole file system, or even the images of non-Linux file systems to tape, ISO images, CDs, or an NFS (Network File System) mount. In case of critical data loss situations, you would be able to easily restore all your data and information, taking your system from mere metal state to its original state if required.

This command-line utility provides following two parameters for different operations-

-O: With this parameter mondoarchive backs up entire file system to the CD, ISO image, tape or to NFS volume. A special boot CD or the boot floppies would be created to enable you to restore data from the bare metal if required.

-V: With this parameter mondoarchive command verifies backup against the live Linux file system. The option might be used in the combination with -O parameter for verifying the backup after its creation, or independently to check how much the live Linux file system has modified since backup was created.

You can call the mondoarchive command without flags for making this auto-detect as many configuration settings as possible, ask you for the rest and then create backup and verify the operating system or the subset thereof.
In order to restore data from backup, you can either run the mondorestore from command line or boot your system from emergency floppies/CD generated while backing up the data. The latter would prove helpful if gremlin wipes the drive.

In case if the backup gets damage or the backup media fails, you can not restore data from backup and need to opt for Data Recovery Linux. The Linux Recovery in such situations is possible through third-party applications.
The tools are known as Linux Data Recovery software. They use high-end scanning techniques to methodically scan the entire hard drive and retrieve all of the lost data. With rich graphical user interface and read-only conduct, the utilities are easy and safe to use.

Stellar Phoenix Linux Data Recovery is the most effective and advanced application for absolute recovery of all your lost data. It recovers data from Ext4, Ext3, Ext2, FAT32, FAT16, and FAT12 file system volumes. The software works well with all major distributions of Linux operating system including Fedora, Ubuntu, SUSE, Red Hat, and Debian.
